ASSEMBLYMAN
MARK LENO ISSUES STATEMENT
ON
CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT RULING
TO
HALT GAY MARRIAGES IN SAN FRANCISCO
SAN
FRANCISCO — Assemblyman Mark Leno, the
Chair of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Legislative Caucus and
author of AB 1967, a bill that will prohibit the denial of marriage
licenses by the State of California to gay and lesbian couples issued the
following statement on today’s California Supreme Court ruling:
“Given
that the four state supreme courts which have considered the
constitutionality of denying marriage licenses to same sex couples have
taken the position of San Francisco, I am optimistic that California’s
Supreme Court will ultimately arrive at the same conclusion,” said
Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco)
“I am pleased that our state’s supreme court did not nullify
the thousands of marriages performed by the city of San Francisco as the
Attorney General had requested.”
“I
remain convinced that the love and commitment demonstrated by 3,700
loving, committed -- and now married -- lesbian and gay couples will win
the approval of our courts and the minds and hearts of Americans,”
continued Leno.
